I'll be driving down the streets
Chooi: Mom, can I take driver's ed right after my birthday?
Mom: No.
Chooi: Why? Why?
Mom: Because you have to focus on your SPM. Driver's ed will be a distraction. You can do it after your exams.
Chooi: It won't take up much of my time! See, my birthday's in January, which is in three month's. I'll be done with it way before SPM starts!
Mom: I said NO.
Chooi: Why?!
Mom: You said it yourself. You think you're matured enough to handle a car in another three months?
Chooi: WHY NOT?
Mom: You're not responsible enough. I can't even trust you to do your share of the chores.
Chooi: Well if you grant me permission for driver's ed, I promise I'll do the chores.
Mom: NO. You can promise me the moon when you want something from me. Besides, if you get the license to drive, you would be driving up and down, chauffeuring your friends to malls and all that. When would you have the time to study? If you don't get straight A's, you'd be driving Proton Sagas when you're older.
Chooi: I would not! I have self descipline! I will study!
Mom: You won't. You will be out all the time. Even now, the only thing that's stopping you from going out all day is your father refusing to drive you there.
Chooi: But that is SO unfair! Everyone is taking driver's ed during Form 5!
Mom: Other people's children, other people's business. Other people jump into the river and die, you want to follow suit?
Chooi: I don't care. I'm signing up for classes right after my birthday.
Mom: I am your mother and I said NO!
Two weeks later..
Chooi: Mom, I want to take driver's ed after my birthday.
Mom: I thought we've already established that driver's ed is out of the question.
Chooi: That wasn't the end of the discussion! I've got a new argument to bring in!
Mom: It wouldn't be of use. I've made up my mind.
Chooi: But! See, they're raising the legal driving age, right? What if after my SPM, they already raised it to 19, or worse, 21? You would have to drive me to college everyday then. And who has ever heard of a college student being driven by her parents everyday?
Mom: You can take the bus or something. And what about never being at home? I'm sure you would be going out all the time if you had the license to drive.
Chooi: No I won't. How about I take driver's ed right after my birthday, and not drive anywhere until after SPM? You know, in case they DO raise the legal driving age, I would already have passed the test.
Mom: *Thinks* Hmm.. We'll see when the time comes.
Chooi: Okay then, it's settled! Driver's ed after birthday!
Mom: *Silence*
And knowing my mom, when she stays silent, it means she has got nothing to say, and that in turn would mean that she agrees to whatever you have said. Only she doesn't want to admit it.
And so, I'll be a licensed driver when all of you still have to take the LRT or something!
Hah!
(Oh, and if you thought this went a little too heated and I sounded like a brat, I'll have you informed that it was all in good fun. My mom isn't mean, and I am not bratty. Really.)
Mom: No.
